I too look forward to the day when all platform assets for the avatar are integrated and I'm hoping IBM will be the organisation to provide the middleware to manage the assets between platforms. Without IP protection and a respected name managing it, it won't happen.

The desktop client is another matter all together though. Unless everything is based upon the Linden Labs open source viewer (which is the viewer of choice as I understand it for the open grid) a default viewer that is conceptually as flexible as a web browser is a long way off. I've certainly not seen anything yet along those lines and as I understood it IBM was primarily working on the middleware.

Interesting times ahead.

Thanks for your comment, Chris. I read your blog article and took a look at slide 92 about interoperability on the slideshare deck you mentioned.

I look forward to the day when standards have evolved to the point where I don't have 15 different virtual world viewers on my desktop, 15 avatars, 15 sets of inventory, etc. That will be a beautiful thing!

Thanks for your comments, Mo. I've been impressed by how when it comes to the Immersive Internet, people give freely of their time and expertise in the name of experimentation and in an effort to propel learning and adoption forward. Congratulations on being part of this effort at IBM.

Hello there,

Some great developments there. (I also blogged about this!! (http://www.chrissparshott.com/2009/01/instant-messaging-is-dead/)

You might also be interested in a slideshare presentation I pulled together. One of the sections is about Virtual worlds - slide 92 might be of interest.

So good to read this. Thank you Erica and congratulations to the individuals involved from IBM Research, OpenSim, Lotus and elsewhere.

As an fan of (and minimal contributor to) this effort I have observed these IBMers work very hard to bring OpenSim and Lotus together. Many of these contributors are passionate volunteers spanning the company responsible for other priorities during their main jobs. Their collective appreciation for virtual worlds and OpenSim has charged IBM and IBM customers with a electrifying passion and understanding for virtual worlds that I believe few large companies can boast.

I am sure there is much more in store. ;)
